Jehovah Tsidkenu is a Hebrew name of God that translates to “The Lord Our Righteousness”. This name is found only in the Old Testament book of Jeremiah 23:5-6 and again in 33:15-16 but is fulfilled in the New Testament through the birth, life, death and resurrection of God’s Son, Jesus.
If I have lost you, then stay with me for a minute while I explain.
First, let’s look at the meaning of righteousness which was given to me through AI and in the most simplest terms means “doing the right thing”. It also goes on to state that the word righteousness can be broken down into a few core ideas, such as: moral correctness-having a good character and making choices that are ethically sound; fairness and justice-treating other people with equal respect and kindness; and integrity-doing the right thing even when no one is looking or when it is difficult. It also states that we can go a step further by being in a “right relationship” with God and living a life that reflects His standard of goodness, love and justice.
“Whew!” That sure is a whole lot to unpack! Don’t you think? So, now, let us get back to why this name Jehovah Tsidkenu comes back to Jesus, because, I promise you, it truly does connect.
So, here’s a question…. Would you not agree that we have a very human problem? We are extremely sinful creatures. When God formed us He gave us free will and no matter how many good works that we do throughout our lifetime, that alone will not get us to God. We always fall away from God even when we are doing the best that we can do on our own. We are flawed and broken. Our God is wise and knows this. Our God wants us to be with Him and knows that we cannot do it on our own, so He made a way through Jesus. See 2 Corinthians 5:21, which states, “God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.”
This is a gift that we have received from God! Now, we get to take that gift and go out into the world and help guide others towards God so they can see and feel and know God the way that we do. We do this by sharing the good news of our redemption through the birth, life, death and resurrection of God’s only Son, Jesus, who died to save us from our sin so that we can be with Him when we die! What a beautiful and selfless act that we have been given! I don’t know about any of you, but that act alone just makes me love our God so much more!! (Related post: Always Room for Growth)
What did I learn from this? I am constantly amazed at our God! I love hearing the stories of people who were changed when they opened themselves up to God. They move me to tears. I know that it is easy to get caught up in the bad things that are happening in the world but we have a God who counterbalances that hate and evil with love and goodness. So, guess where my eyes are looking? I’m looking up because that’s where my God is. I’m looking within because that’s where my God lives and I’m looking out to see who I can bring with me. What can you gain from this? All you have to do is ask for God to be there, to help you and to show you His love. That’s it! Just invite Him into your day and see what happens and watch how you are changed. Recognize His love for you and thank Him for loving you and accepting you the way that you are, right now, but not leaving you where He found you. You will be changed! I can promise you that. Your heart will be become lighter and you will see a new you because the old you is no more. So…. what do you have to lose? Nothing and what you gain will be so much more!
